TSC Camera captures the wildlife near us!

Look what was caught on TSC Camera in May and June 2012

The camera bought with funds raised from TSC members was installed in the Conservancy area on 12th May 2012. The team from the Cape Leopard Trust checked it when they serviced their cameras in the area just 2 weeks later and got these great pictures.

Charlie (BM16) the male leopard known to be in the area walked by on no less than 3 occasions in those 2 weeks! The other creatures captured are Eland, Red Hartebeest, a Small Spotted Genet and a Porcupine.

We will be checking the camera again on 20th July.

Isn’t it great to see what other creatures share the dam with us!

Camps at TSC June 2012

Voortrekker Winter Water Works Camp at TSC

This was the 12th year that the Voortrekkers hosting their annual ‘Winter Water Works’ camp, at TSC with a record number of 145 youths .

In total, there were 170 Voortrekkers, including the officers and helpers. The youth come from all over the Western Cape and a  few from Eastern Cape.

The Voortrekkers arrived on Sunday, 24th June and and departed Friday, 29th June.  On Sunday, after arrival their first session was a ‘Man overboard’ exercise and all 145 youths had to brave the icy cold water. The rest of their water works programme includes: water safety, water rescue operations, angling, sailing and media coverage.

A kitchen (army tent) was  been set up next to their camp on the public side, where all Voortrekkers were served hot food throughout the week.

They were a wonderful group of young people and we hope to see them again soon!

Special Forces Regiment Camp at TSC

We also have a number of military personnel, 25 in total, camping at TSC since the 3rd June. This is not just an ordinary camp. They are busy attending an intensive diving training course, which is part two of a specialised training course. .

The camp was fully equipped with all the necessary essentials for such a task, including a doctor in attendance, an ambulance and decompression chamber. They are camping on our public side and have been active everyday, despite the cold and wet. The army chef ensures all soldiers enjoy three or more hot delicious meals a day. The well equipped and efficient kitchen is set up in the middle of their camp on the public side.

We asked Major Alley, in charge of this operation, about the poor visibility the divers would be experiencing in the water. He replied that there part of the course is navigation and the current conditions were ideal for the divers. Major Alley further stated that he was very satisfied with the conditions at TSC and has mentioned that TSC is the ideal place to host similar camps in the future.

Defence Angling Club (DAC)

19 anglers from Defence Force Angling Club also braved the cold this past weekend for an angling competition from Friday, 19h00 to Sunday 10h00.

Chairperson of DAC, Raymond Stebbing, reported that it was a wonderful family orientated weekend and was a most successful competition.

A total of 213 Carp were caught.  Raymond was also pleased to report that all fish caught were all in good condition with no visible diseases.

The heaviest Carp weighed 1.62kg and the second heaviest weighed 1,03kg. The most fish caught by an angler was 38 fish and the second biggest catch had 25 fish in the net.

Most of the fish were caught near to the jetty. Raymond stated that due to the cold water, the smaller Carp were the most active.

Congratulations to Table View High, the Stadt 23 Interschools Champions 2012

Article submitted by Dan Spratley, (Table View High)

After skippers briefing we had to choose team colours, Reddam Constantia took blue, Fish Hoek took yellow and Table View got orange. After being postponed due to a lack of wind, we finally got under way with Table View taking on Reddam in the first flight.

On our boat we were rather nervous as Ryan had never helmed a keelboat in a race before and had never match raced but we had a strong team with 2 ex Optimist World sailors, Daniel Spratley and Ryan Barnardo, a Lipton Cup team winner, Oli Vande Pitte and a really large Damien Botha who is an active sailor on Corum.  Between us we have sailed 7 Lipton Cups and much more keelboat experiences.

Table View came out victorious in the first race which boosted our confidence and took away the nerves. After 4 races each Table View was undefeated with four out of four wins and Reddam and Fish hoek where tied with one win each.

The Sunday’s racing was again postponed due to no wind and racing started when the wind came up. Table View remained undefeated winning four of four races but the real battle was on for second place as Fish Hoek and Reddam where tied going into the days racing. Fish Hoek won their first heat against Reddam so were at a slight advantage going into the second heat, but if Reddam won the second heat they would be tied again and would have to have a sail off for second place. Fish Hoek came out victorious to finish second overall ahead of Reddam by quite a distance in the dying breeze.

I would just like to thank the TSC Cafeteria for supplying us with food and the boat owners Kuba and Mary-Anne for lending their boats for the event. It was a fun weekend and an awesome event as there are not any other match racing events.

We will be back next year to defend our title, but would like to encourage more schools to participate in next year’s event to have more boats and more fun.
